Top 50 Words in Pashto

Based on an analysis of dataset that had over one million words!

This article is centered around the Top 50 most commonly used words in Pashto based on research conducted by a Pashtun Data Scientist. As you will notice many of these words (but not all) are functional words. These words serve to create structure and relationships between objects and ideas. Examples of functional words are: by, at, the, an, yet, in, on, etc. By focusing in on these words early on, you will be able to read faster and comprehend sentences better.

Fun Fact: According to social psychologist James Pennebaker, “function words account for less than one-tenth of 1 percent of your vocabulary but make up almost 60 percent of the words you use.”

Note: We have not included the meanings at this time. The intended audience of this article are current Pashto speakers who are interested in becoming literate in Pashto. These speakers would already be familiar, at least informally, with how these functional words work in a given Pashto sentence. For newcomers to the Pashto language, we advise seeking a more detailed resource to learn the appropriate usages and nuances of the words.
